The IRS has introduced a new Form 1099-NEC, Nonemployee Compensation. It's a sibling to Form 1099-MISC and replaces it for certain purposes. You must file it for each person in the course of your business to whom you have paid at least $600 during the year for the following:
You've probably received a 1099-INT tax form from your bank. It signifies it paid interest on your savings. Another may come from your state, attesting to its tax refund to you. If you're a freelancer or contract worker, you may have received a 1099-MISC from your clients. And if you paid independent contractors more than $600 each in a given year, you need to complete a 1099-MISC.
One of the most important tax and payroll issues a company has to address is who is an actual employee and who is an independent contractor. Once you have that worked out, your next step is making sure each category of workers gets the right forms. True employees get a Form W-2 each year, and freelancers — independent contractors — get a Form 1099-MISC. This form can be used for a variety of payments, and one of the most common and significant uses is for independent contractors.
